Islanda 2 – 1 Austria

Iceland 2 – 1 Austria

Iceland scored an incredible injury-time winner against Austria which was celebrated far and wide, not just by the people of Iceland, but by hundreds of millions of football supporters all over the world. Iceland are a team of underdogs and their progress so far in the Euro 2016 has been appreciated by everyone.

Iceland qualified to the second round as the second best team in their group, ahead of Christiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Ronaldo, if you remember, had called Iceland a “small country with a small mentality”. Well, Ronaldo, what do you have to say now?

The injury time goal was scored by substitute Arnor Ingvi Traustason, who slid in at the far post to seal the victory for his team after a thrilling counter-attacking move.

It was Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who scored the first goal for Iceland early in the first half. Austria fought back after that and missed out on a penalty kick after David Alaba was adjudged to have been pulled back.

That miss proved to be costly, although Austria equalized later with a brilliant goal by substitute Alessandro Schopf, who struck the ball low in to the net after a mazy run around the Iceland midfield.

But it wasn’t Austria’s day and despite their best efforts, they were knocked out of the Euro 2016. Iceland now play England in the second round in what will be a thrilling contest.
